Class update for the week of October 5th

Students begin every single class with a prayer in Spanish. The kids love to start with a prayer!

We pray:
1st grade: Sign of the Cross,
2nd grade: Sign of the Cross. Learning “Hail Mary”.
3rd grade: Sign of the Cross. Hail Mary
4th grade: Sign of the Cross. Hail Mary. Learning “Our Father”
5th grade: Sign of the Cross. Hail Mary. Our Father.

1st Grade:

Spanish in 1st grade is mainly oral. We are learning “greetings,” numbers from 0-10, and we are starting with emotions.

E.g.: How are you?                Very well. Thank you!
¿Cómo estás tú?           Muy bien. ¡Gracias!

Next week we are starting to learn the colors.

2nd Grade:

Every worksheet completed for class should be taken home and studied as homework.

In 2nd grade we start with the same topics that they learned last year, but slowly we begin to develop the writing skills in Spanish.

We are practicing “what is your name?” and “how are you?”— the same questions are taught using the third person singular in oral and written forms. After a week of oral activities, a worksheet with the above mentioned information was given to the students; they are supposed to take it home and study it.

Please review the “La Sagrada Familia” worksheet with your child by asking them in English and having the student respond in Spanish.      E.g. Parent: “What is the name of Jesus’ Father?”
                             Student: “José”

The names learned are José, María, and Jesús.

3rd Grade

Every worksheet completed for class should be taken home and studied as homework. The information on the worksheets will be used on future quizzes and tests.

We have been reviewing from last year’s basic grammar structure and adding a few more vocabulary words.

During class the students are writing a basic story, which should not be worked on at home. We are all working on it in class. They also have to illustrate the story. Once finished students will be randomly asked one at a time to hang their illustrations on the dry erase board and present the story to the class.

Once the in-class project is completed, students should take it home and practice sharing their story in order to give a good presentation to the class.

4th Grade

Every worksheet completed for class should be taken home and studied as homework. The information on the worksheets will be used on future quizzes and tests.

By now the students should know the days of the week and how to spell them. After the vocabulary was reviewed orally a worksheet was given for them to study.

Last week, after learning questions and vocabulary in relation to the season of “Summer,” a written short story was given to the students.

We practiced reading the story in class and they should take it home and review— this includes reviewing word pronunciations and the meaning of the story.

The story will be the subject of a quiz probably at the end of this week. The students will be informed of the date.

5th Grade

Every worksheet completed for class should be taken home and studied as homework. The information on the worksheets will be used on future quizzes and tests.

Students in 5th grade have studied the months, seasons, and weather. Currently we are learning “what do you do in Summer?” we are dealing with verbs like “to swim,” “to eat,” “to go,” “to play” (first and third person singular and first person plural).

They have in their binders worksheets with vocabulary and grammar about the weather and the seasons that they should know by now.
