Sin is an offense or wrong against God.
Mortal sin is when we kill God’s life in our soul by disobeying Him in a serious or big way (Children usually never commit a mortal sin).
Venial sin does not kill God’s life in our soul but hurts us and offends God when we choose to be selfish and not choose the good way of Jesus.
5. What are the 5 steps of going to Confession?
1. To PRAY TO THE HOLY SPIRIT to remember my sins.
2. To be TRULY SORRY for my sins.
3. To DECIDE never to commit these sins again.
4. To CONFESS my sins to a PRIEST.
5. To DO THE PENANCE the priest tells me to do.
6. Explain what it means to “examine your conscience:”
To examine my conscience means to think of or remember my sins.
7. What is a temptation?
A temptation is a situation where I am attracted to sin. A temptation is not a sin. I can choose to sin or not to sin.
8. Tell what you do and say once you walk in to make a good Confession:
1. When it is my turn to make my Confession, I walk in and kneel down on the kneeler inside the confessional. I begin to speak when the priest opens the little window or screen. I talk just loud enough for the priest alone to hear me.
2. I make the Sign of the Cross and say, “Bless me Father for I have sinned.”
3. I say, “This is my first Confession ... (or it has been one month or ______ since my last Confession).
4. “These are my sins...” (tell your sins)
5. I listen to what the priest tells me.
6. I say my Act of Contrition or listen to the words of absolution. (This depends on what the priest wants me to do)
7. I say “Thank you Father,” before leaving.
8. After leaving the confessional, I thank God for forgiving my sins. I say the prayers the priest has given me for my penance. If my penance is to do some act, I ask God to help me remember to do it as soon as I have a chance.
9. What is the reason the priest gives you a penance?
To make up for my sins
10. What does it mean to have your sins absolved?
To be absolved means to completely taken away
11. In the Sacrament of Confession (also known as the Sacrament of Reconciliation) Who comes to forgive your sins?
JESUS
12. To whom did Jesus give the power to forgive sins to?
Jesus gave the power to forgive sins to the Apostles who in turn handed that power on to all priests in the Catholic Church.
13. How often should a person go to the Sacrament of Confession?
Many people go to Confession once a month. Many people go to monthly Confession on the first Saturday of each month. Of course, if a person has committed a mortal or serious sin, they should run to the Sacrament of Confession as soon as possible. Children usually do not commit mortal or serious sins. To regularly go to the Sacrament of Confession each month will help me overcome small faults and sins when I am young so I grow up, I will be stronger to say “no” to big temptations and sins.
